'If It's Football, It's Vital'

By Default?

The season has started well for Chris Smalling.

The youngster has impressed at right-back playing for United and has also grabbed that first England camp, also at right back.

But Smalling, although expressing a happiness to fill-in at right back, does still see himself as a centre back, as he explains,

"At the minute I`m needed to do a job at right-back, although the aim is to go on and challenge Rio Ferdinand."

"To be playing in a different position for United and England is obviously hard and I`m learning with each game."

"But hopefully, in years to come, I`ll have many games at centre-back because that`s where I see my position and that`s where my future lies."

"I see this as a temporary thing, although I`m happy to play where both managers want me as long as I`m playing."

With such fierce competition, at United, for the centre back roles with Ferdinand, Vidic, Evan and Jones, could Smalling become a world class right-back almost by default?

I can't really see past Rafael and Fabio as the future of our fullbacks and i'm shocked that Fabio isn't playing at RB over Smalling, especially after the good season he had last season. Smalling will return to CB and based on current form I would definately pick him over Ferdinand. It will be struggle for both Vidic and Ferdinand to get a place in the team let alone maintain one with the way Jones and Smalling are playing. What a pair they will be when they fulfill their potential.

Watching Chris play RB against Bulgaria, I was wincing a lot! Hes been brilliant at RB for us in the games he's played there, but really seemed to be out of his depth on Friday night. Hopefully this will not have an adverse effect on his confidence - and he can continue with blistering form for Utd....

He doesnt add anything in attack playing on right flank. He is better suited as CB.
