Fletcher Score for Scots!

It was almost a fairy tale comeback.

Although Darren Fletcher has played in two reserve games this season the Scottish midfielder has yet to sample first team action.

This afternoon though, Fletcher was part of the Scotland starting eleven that took on the Czech Republic at Hampden Park.

With the score locked at 1-1, a slip in the Czech defence allowed Miller to race away and square the ball for Fletcher to slide home.

With very little time left on the clock it looked as though the goal would prove to be the winner. Sadly, a very debatable penalty awarded by the Dutch referee, let the Czech Republic get a last minute winner.

Although the result will have disappointed Darren, he`ll be glad to get some valuable match time behind him.

Before the game he reminded everybody about his situation and how it had been a long fight back, commenting,

"I had a bad virus, a stomach infection."

"The biggest thing was the weight loss."

"I lost close to a stone which for someone like me - I don`t have a stone to lose - was massive."

"That was the biggest thing, building my strength back up and putting my weight back on was a real struggle. I was stuck in bed for two weeks."

"But I had constant reassurances from the doctor that it was a bit of bad luck, a combination of different things which had a domino effect which set me back."

"I am a positive person so I expected to be back the next week, then it was the week later, and then I thought the next week."

"I just had to eat as much as I could to try to put it back on but even that was a struggle for me."

"I just ate as much as I could, protein shakes, meal replacement drinks."

Welcome back Darren!

I'm glad he's back after what sounds like an awful illness. Now we can add a defensive edge to our midfield again.

I don't know footballtaz1. Cleverley and Anderson have been great but playing both at the same time means the central midfield will be imbalanced and will lack a defensive edge. I guess we will have to wait and see.

He looked so thin compared to his usual self - still needs to put a bit of meat on his bones!
