No Defoe But Carrick Close

At last, it looks like the paper talk is soon to be over as Sir Alex Ferguson claimed on MUTV that United were near completing the deal to bring Tottenham and England midfielder Michael Carrick to Old Trafford.

The press and web have been full of talk all day that 25-year-old Carrick is on his way to the Theatre of Dreams, now it looks like they are right!

Sir Alex said: 'We're close to that. There have been some agreements on part of it but I think it`s to be finalised over the day or so."

However he has ruled out any possible move for fellow Spurs player and England striker Jermain Defoe

"Well there has been no interest from us on the Tottenham situation. We made a move for Carrick and that`s the only thing we did, that was the only player of interest to us at this moment in time. I think it will stay that way. I`ve got young Rossi to consider and I want to see him progress as a centre forward. He's more likely to be staying here now.'

Adding: 'With Gattuso, we were always waiting to see what happened to AC Milan and now they're in the European Cup and still in Serie A, there`s very little chance of progress as he`s such an important player for them."

Rossi, who has 53 goals in 53 reserve games, signed a new deal recently keeping him at Utd until 2010.

No shearer, very good business on Spurs part and desperation on the Man Utd side, Man Utd get a good player, Spurs get additional funds to splash elesewhere.

An excellent buy for Man U and excellent business for Tottenham, huge profit plus had the players services for 2 years. Although Carrick is an excellent player Man U must stop this 'I must have him at all costs' thing, if the gutter press speculation is correct then you have paid too much, 15-18 million is ridiculous for a player still struggling to get into the England team!
