Injury Woes!

Having acquired some outstanding talent in the summer, after seeing some of the old school retire, Sir Alex Ferguson would have been hoping that United would have got off to a trouble free start this season.

Sadly, despite getting all three points at the Hawthorns, that wasn`t the case.

Sir Alex could only watch on as he lost both his first choice centre backs with injuries.

Nemanja Vidic was the first to limp off with a calf injury followed by Rio Ferdinand with a hamstring injury not too long after.

Speaking about the pair, Sir Alex had this to say,

"Rio will be out for six weeks and with Vidic we don`t know yet."

"If it`s a nerve he could be out for a couple of weeks. But having young Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling is a Godsend. Patrice Evra is back so we`ve got options."

Unfortunately, there`s also the small matter of losing Rafael Da Silva, with a shoulder injury sustained in training, on Friday, to contend with.

Like we said, not the start Sir Alex would have probably hoped for.

I would never of guessed that injuries to the defence would've happened so soon, I mean the midseason ones are becoming quite cliche but early season ones are new. I did wonder if selling both Brown and O'Shea would come back to bite us and whilst it hasn't just yet, it may prove to in the near future. I really do hope the remaining defenders stay fit. Fabio, Evra, Evans, Smalling and Jones have enough quality to ensure were still solid in defence. Myself I would opt for a defensive lining of Fabio, Smalling, Jones, Evra though I suspect Fergie will take Jones out of the equation and play Evans instead. Maybe we should panic buy another defender just to be sure? I mean, we was going for Varane also wasn't we? So maybe a young O'Shea-esque utility defender would be a good signing.

Still time for a couple more signings - we will just have to see what happens - I don't think Vidic will be out too long though.

Or just hope that our attack / wingers score more goals than we let in. However, it is a bit of a problem, playing Spurs and Arse without Rio / Vidic. Though Jones, Smalling and Evans, have all looked the part in the 2 first matches.

If we can continue just to win away from home then maybe the 20th title will be ours - we always start really slow and then build up and ahve a fantastic run in - but De Gea will gain confidence - and become an awesome keeper in this league for us....

If we can maintain our home form and add a few more away wins to last seasons tally we should win the big number 20. It's a very tough start to the season but even with a lack of sharpness and match fitness we should still be able to win, if not draw, against both Tottenham and Arsenal. I don't see Ferdinand as a massive loss as I reckon Smalling is better anyway, he only really lacks experience. It will be interesting to see how our new approach will fair against the two teams in the league which play the most attractive football.
