'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Embracing the challenge

Does Michael Carrick fear the competition for places at United this season? Far from it he is, as he told sky sports news, ready to 'embrace' this challenge ahead of him.

Not only are there seasoned pros that Carrick will be competing with for a central midfield position younger players are also emerging but he is up for the battle for a place in the starting XI: 'I'm not fearful of that at all, I embrace it that's what this club is all about.

'It's going to be tough but every season is as tough as each other.

'It's a clean slate now, we've had a bit of a turn-around with the playing staff and we've got a really young squad now.

'There's always competition for places here, that's what makes it so great. You've got to be on top of your game to be playing and that's probably how we've had the success over the years. If you want to be involved you really have to be at your best.

'It's great to see the young lads coming through. I really enjoy seeing the young lads progressing and getting a chance in the first team.'

Its a fine attitude from the England man and he will need such a mentality as he will be far from a certainty to start each week, although the chances are he will do so more often than not...

FFS Carrick - you really are terrible - why are you playing for us?!?!?!

"You've got to be on top of your game to be playing" - I'm sorry Carrick but if we had more competition for places in the last couple of years you really wouldn't be playing because, lets face it, you're far from the top of your game. I'm not sure what it is Fergie sees in you still but in my eyes you shouldn't be anything more than a squad player and the only feasible explanation in my mind for you starting is to add balance to the midfield. If you weren't the only defensive option we had and you had better competition than an inconsistent Anderson, an ageing Scholes and Gibson you wouldn't be playing. Our midfield this season in the 4-4-1-1 we play should be the defensive option Carrick/Fletcher and then the offensive option Anderson/Cleverley. I don't think I can bare to see a Carrick/Fletcher partnership again, especially when there's better options than Carrick, it's just far too defensive and lacks technical ability.

Wonder how the Fletcher/Cleverley partnership would unfold?
