Meeting the 'old adversaries'

Meeting the 'old adversaries'

What a way to kick-off the football season eh? A meeting with your nearest rivals in the traditional curtain raiser to the new season as Man United will with Sunday's community shield meeting with Man City.

Many might see rivalries with other clubs as 'bigger' these days, although are they really?

Nothing will be won or lost this weekend, no 'major' silverware collected or an assurance of premier league success gained as a result of the outcome of the game, but it sure as hell puts down a 'marker' for the months ahead...

Will Sir Alex field his strongest 11?

There are some questions marks against this but it will still be a star packed and quality side, and squad.

Michael Carrick - Achilles, Rafael - knock - and Javier Hernandez - concussion - are all certainly out but big money summer arrivals Ashley Young, Phil Jones and David de Gea are in line for competitive debuts.

As for City former United forward, and want-away, Carlos Tevez was granted permission for an 'extended break' after his move to Brazil fell through recently and his future remains shrouded in mystery, he is out. Summer signings Sergio Aguero, Gael Clichy and Stefan Savic will get run-outs though.

I would image that everyone is up for this Manchester derby to signal that the English domestic season is underway!

Don't know about anyone else but I personally would like to see: De Gea, Fabio, Smalling, Jones, Evra, Valencia, Fletcher, Cleverley, Nani, Rooney, Welbeck - However I can see it actually being: De Gea, Fabio, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Valencia, Carrick, Giggs, Nani/Young, Rooney, Owen/Berby.

At least Carrick's out injured that gives us some hope. Injuries in midfield and a lack of obvious attacking threat from the centre may force Fergie into playing 2 up front, well Rooney in behind Berba-sloth. It's a real shame Hernandez is out though.

When did City become "old adversaries"? There I was thinking we were the "noisy neighbours". Guess that's the effect of being humbled the last time the two sides met.

Make no mistake, you're still the noisy neighbours.

Thanks mate, I feel better now, all is right with the world again. Funny really that City are referred to as noisy when it's your manager, your players and your ex players that provide column inch after column inch of I'll informed crap about City.

Irony doesn't bode well with us :P In fairness, the players get asked a loaded question and thanks to the rivalry we're all too obliged to answer. Give and take on both sides though and most of it is overhyped media drivel whilst numpty fans on both sides, wswilly in your case, can't help themselves and have a compulsion to turn something completely unrelated to City/United into something City/United related.

Just put on a good game for us neutrals so my excitement for the new season can build up nicely! City fans do your Poznan and as for the Mancs I hope Gary Neville is there with some prize quotes too. 3-3 and penalties would make my Sunday.

A glorified friendly, that United surely will win, even if we play a lot of our young reserves.
