'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Living the dream

He might have only been at the club for a few weeks, and has only been in the public eye for a couple of years but Phil Jones is loving the 'rollercoaster' ride he is on at the moment.

Jones' career has developed rapidly and, as he told Inside United, the teenager never expected his rise to be so meteoric: 'it has all happened so quickly.

'I am 19 and I did not expect so much to occur at such an early stage of my career.

'I am just riding the rollercoaster at the minute and enjoying everything. I did play every week at Blackburn and want to do the same at United.'

Even though the 19-year-old would like to play week-in-week-out, as he did at Blackburn, he realises this is not something that will happen with United, well not at first anyway...

Although taking his chances, when they come along, is what he will do: 'I am a realistic person and I know that is not going to happen with the quality of player we have here.

'As I improve and show good performances in training, hopefully I will get an opportunity and will take it.'

The England U21 can play, and has played, in defence or midfield and although he would of course play in midfield is asked to by Sir Alex he feels his best position is in the heart of defence: 'that is definitely where I play my best football. I like to see the game in front of me and read the play.

'When the manager asked me to move into midfield at Blackburn it was strange. I didn't expect it.

'It took a few games to adapt to that role and the positions I should take. But if I was asked to do that here, I would feel comfortable with it.'

Such is the versatility of Jones the £17m man has played some of pre-season for United at right back.

The teenager will certainly be pushing for a place in the starting line-up, in central defence this season, although it is the seasons ahead that will see him really step-up and secure his place in the heart of defence for club and country I am sure.

Speaking of country he will, apparently, be included in the England squad for next weeks friendly with Holland.

If Jones likes to read the game then there's the possibility that can become the solid defensive unit we need in midfield when playing a 4-3-3.
TheFamousNo7
Jones will fill in and cover defensive positions just like O'Shea did until Rio steps aside and then he might just claim the centre back position for himself.
