'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Natural or Honed?

Just how much is it natural ability and just how much of it can you hone?

Scoring that is and being a natural footballer!

The reason I ask is that there are some great comments from Javier Hernandez in the tabloids this morning.

The quotes suggest that Javier is working on all aspects of his game and that he`s determined to become a better player, see what you think:-

"I feel at home and believe my game is developing all the time as I understand better how to play for this great club."

"My strength has improved and also I`m improving how to play - being quicker with the ball, with more technique and concentration - because it is difficult to keep the ball in the Premier League."

"Of course, I have a lot more improving to do and I will work hard to achieve that."

"There are a lot of great players in this league and I need to keep improving my game to succeed here."

"I`m working on all aspects - speed, strength, technical ability with the ball, movement off the ball as well as heading."

Which brings us back to that original question of how much is it natural ability and how much of it can be honed?

Is Javier a natural goal-scorer or is he the kind of player that you can mould into an all-round player without blunting that edge that has got him where he is today?

I`d appreciate your thoughts.

It think its gotta be honed. Its all down to playing football at a young age. I think his link up play and passing could do with a bit of work.

You have to have a certain amount of natural ability and a strikers instinct but to be capable of doing it at the highest level requires a lot of "honing". To persevere in trying to constantly improve requires a strong willed mentality and a high degree of professionalism which Hernandez seems to have, the fact that he acknowledges supposed weaknesses in his game and has en devoured to improve them is a credit to himself and to all the coaches he has worked with. The end result will be that we will have quite possibly one of the best strikers in world football who cost nothing really in today's market.

This season I was only ever frustrated with his first touch, which really prevented him grabbing a few more goals. I'm just glad to hear he's got the right mentality and is always looking to improve.
