A Rival on the Wing?

The signing of Ashley Young will provide extra competition for places in the starting eleven.

Young, although established as a winger, can play through the middle.

Once the season starts, it`ll be interesting to see where Young fits into the starting eleven. If it is out wide, then Sir Alex Ferguson will have to decide whether to go with one form Nani, Valencia and Young or whether to go for real width and play two of them.

Valencia, currently playing in the Copa America has given his views on the arrival of Young and seems content to battle for a place, remarking to the media,

"I heard about this on the news - I do not fear his arrival."

"The season is long, and under Sir Alex Ferguson everyone will get their chance in United`s key matches."

"Ashley is a good footballer and I believe that he will help is towards even more success next season."

"As for myself, I have two seasons left at United and I am convinced I will fulfil those. And maybe a few more years, too."

Although Antonio does go on to further fuel those rumours by adding,

"There are rumours about other clubs but I have no news about that."

I still feel there could be another twist in this one with one of Nani or Valencia departing!

If anyone were to leave it would be Nani but even still I can't see it happening. Only Madrid and Barca would appeal to him but they're in no need of wingers nor will they meet our asking price. The only wide player I can see leaving is Park and thats solely based on the fact that he said he can't see himself staying at United beyond 2013. I hope it isn't the case though.

For those who didn't know, we missed out on Varane yesterday. He decided to join Madrid where his potential will no doubt go unfulfilled like so many other promising stars. A massive influence was Zidane who apparently convinced Varane to go to Madrid. Now, quick question, is it tapping up if you're using a club member of staff, in this case Zidane their scout, to influence a players decision? I would of thought it was, if not maybe we should play the Madrid game and ask Cantona to start having words with our future French targets and hope they'll listen to him rather than that twunt Zidane.

Zidane is a top class pimp. Sure we will prob get Varane in a year or 2 anyway, when he is fed up with his lack of football and the endless bs that seems to surround Madrid. you are right though we should be using our former stars like Real do, Cantona, Kanchelskis, Ole and so on to influence potential signings to see us as a preferred option.

Knowing FIFA and UEFA though we will be banned from competing in the transfer market for tapping up whilst the Barca players stick another Barca shirt on Fabregas and Real Madrid legend Zidane publically declares that he's spoken to Ribery and has persuaded him to join Real.

Whoa where's the fire shyboy? Do you not like Valencia or something? If anything Valencia's proved his above and beyond the fee we paid and solidified his positions as one of the best wingers in the league. Heck, call me bias but I think Valencia is one of the best traditional chalk on your boots wingers in the world.

Valencia is a typical Fergie player. Park is a big game player who has proven himself time and again. His roaming midfield role really cost us during the CL. Young might have been brought as an understudy.

valencia is not my kind of winger...yes he showed us what he can do in a couple of matches but i think his jst a bench player who is being helped by fergie....he has never been my kind of winger when fergie brought him some some eye brows where raised......i think d worse i have ever seen a winger play was valencia in CL final..and i still stand on my words he n fergie cost us that final with all respect to back tho......i think d addition of young is very big plus il love to see valencia seat on d bench and young be drafted in d squad to see a young nani comb, that is what we call wingers........

That is what YOU call wingers. Whilst the step overs, trickery and long shots are easy on the eye, entertaining and exciting, in my eyes you can't beat the traditional chalk on your boots winger. People went in raptures over Bales tap, run, cross football whilst Messi, the best player in the world, is reknowned for his simple dribbling game rather than the extravagent triple back flip, double axle what-ya-ma-call-it skill the prima donnas of football use today. Whilst Valencia is clearly not in the same breath as Messi, it encourages the point that wingplay is about more than just the fancy tricks. All bark and no bite. It's a shame that the traditional wingers of football are a dying breed and whilst I enjoy watching the modern winger e.g. Ronaldo/Nani/Ronaldinho perform their mesmerising skills there's nothing more infuriating than when it: A) doesn't work --- B) Slows down play --- C) Ruins a goalscoring opportunity --- D) Encourages cheating. Valencia's Champions League final performance was poor but then again how many players weren't poor on the occassion? He had a bad game against the best team in the world, I for one won't hold that against him.

Valencia is top class, United was a better team once he came back for injury. Nani will not leave, we need at minimum of wingers, Valencia and Nani cannot play in all games, so Young will an invaluable squad member. With no winterbreak, PL clubs need 22 top players.. I for one do not understand young talented players, why would you want to go to madrid, its a circus, and so many talented players are wasted, is it for the history well they havent been winning much in the last 6 years, I guess the climate and paycheck is probably what appeals to these young players, however when considering their development, I dont understand them. Varane will not play a single game for the first team next season..

valencia might probbably not even make d bench in some other not saying d guy is not good but he is not good enough to be called a a winger u have to have a bit a skills eg...nani nasri ronaldo young messi dos santos neymar and so on... i think u really need to to spy a bit on the laliga and see what winger can do..... it is not necessary u have to be extra skillful but sometimes its not jst about running a marathon on d u miss d good old ronaldo days that is a defination of a winger skill, pace, crossing ability very brilliant in front of goal can someone pls lecture valencia for me........and i still stand my ground he and evra were d poorest players on that faithful night.....yea !!!!!

Completely agree nordkap. I think a lot of the youngsters see Real Madrid as the glitz and glamour of football when in actual fact for the money they spend the Galacticos are some of the biggest flops in football. Since Real Madrids Galacticos era begun in 2000, they spent: Ronaldo 39 mil, Beckham 35 mil, Figo 37.5 mil, Zidane 75 mil. Their return? 1 European trophy and 1 league win followed by a 3 year drought. I like to think the Galacticos ended there but nope, that dope Perez has attempted to rebuild it again spending, to name but a couple, 80 mil on Ronaldo and another 56 mil on Kaka and it's still in it's early days! It's frustrating enough that Real Madrid lives very much on it's past but it's even more frustrating when I read players are joining them because they want to be part of the new Galactico's.
