Jones Deal Wrapped Up

It`s always a good feeling when somebody signs for us having turned down approaches from several of our main rivals.

Even more so when the rumours of a possible approach for the player got those anticipation levels rising!

Manchester United wasted no time in wrapping up the signing of Phil Jones yesterday, paying Blackburn Rovers a fee, reportedly, of £16.5 million for the talented 19 year old.

It`s also being reported that Jones has put pen-to-paper on a five year deal that will see his initial salary start at a cool £40,000 a week (nice pocket money for a 19 year old) and rising throughout the term of his contract.

All that remains to be seen now is whether Jones, who is viewed as the long term successor to Rio Ferdinand can force his way into the starting eleven or whether his appearances will be somewhat sporadic as Sir Alex Ferguson and his coaching team nurse him through the early stages of what should be a lengthy career with Manchester United.

Although he does arrive with a glowing tribute from a certain Wayne Rooney who is quoted as having remarked about Jones,

"He`s one of the toughest defenders I played against last season."

From all at Vital Manchester United, welcome aboard Phil Jones, may your United career be long and successful.

We've quite literally got Englands future defensive partnership. Smalling and Jones at the back, assuming they develop as expected, really does secure the back 4 for the future. Rafael, Smalling, Jones, Fabio, i'm certainly not complaining at that prospect.

Jones is NOT a done deal. Allegedly, there is a dispute between Rovers & United. That is why, there is no offical news . http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story/_/id/927133/phil-jones-valued-by-rovers-at-L25m,-not-L16m-?cc=3436
