Berbatov Wants to Stay!

Is Dimitar Berbatov determined to stay at Manchester United?

The reason we ask is that following the somewhat surprising news that Michael Owen had been granted a new one year contract, we surmised that Berbatov would be leaving.

Well not so if the Bulgarian has his way.

Breaking the silence after he didn`t even make the substitutes bench for the Champions League Final, Dimitar has explained why he wasn`t visible at Wembley and his hopes for the future, commenting to the red-top publications,

"I will stay and I will fight for the 20th title."

"If I were an easy quitter, I would never have made it this far. Everything at Manchester United starts from scratch for me on July 4th."

"There will be new finals and we will be fighting for new titles. I am moving ahead. When you go through difficult times, you should not quit."

"The truth is that I stayed in the dressing room and watched the Champions League Final there on a television screen."

"I was really disappointed. I was ashamed that I was not part of the team and did not want people to see how sad I feel."

All very reasonable enough but don`t you, like me, get the impression that Dimitar might not get what he wants and that he could well be forced out of Old Trafford!

Good luck with that Berba. If I was him and i'd just seen Owen getting a new contract I'd have my agent looking for a new club.

Still not entirely convinced he will leave to be honest. Fergie does really like him and often draws parallels to Cantona, in their attitude and play. With Owen getting a new contract I can only imagine Berby will be getting one soon also, or perhaps Fergie is making him really work for it. Owen getting a new contract has worried me slightly, as it hints that Welbeck and Macheda possibly aren't ready yet or aren't good enough. Perhaps they are good enough but Fergie doesn't recognise this thus forcing them to leave because of a lack of 1st team football. I might be well off and Owen may just be a precautionary measure and will be used as back-up for Welbeck, Machede, Hernandez, Berby and Rooney. If Berby does leave however, it may be comforting in the sense that Fergie does believe the youngsters are ready to take the next step to the 1st team. Macheda might go out on loan again, mainly due to him still being very young and still developing however Welbeck must stay.
