Van der Sar`s Retirement Edges Closer

And so the final curtain draws ever nearer for Edwin van der Sar.

Our forty-year old keeper has but a mere handful of games left to play for Manchester United before it`s time to hang up those gloves for good.

Yesterday Edwin looked as good as ever. Although he had very little to do, except for one world-class save form a Jack Rodwell daisy-cutter, his mere presence in the side gives it an extra air of authority.

In his press conference afterwards, Sir Alex Ferguson spoke about his Dutch keeper and also the hard job of getting someone to recruit as his replacement, commenting,

"To hear him at half-time today motivating the players was absolutely wonderful."

"He also made a fantastic save - absolutely fantastic - and I think it even got a little deflection."

And as for tying down a world class replacement,

"I hope it`s not impossible because we had a similar situation with Peter Schmeichel when he left and I had the opportunity to sign Edwin then but the situation conspired against us."

"We made a wrong decision but, since we`ve had him, he`s been unbelievable."

He certainly has and his loss will be a huge void for the boss to fill.

Still good enough to play for a few years yet but all the same we must respect his decision and stop pushing him. Another legend, his service to the club has lead to much success and he won't be forgotten. Perhaps a coaching role is on the cards for young Van Der Sar.
