United - Smalling`s Fear

With Rio Ferdinand still sidelined, Chris Smalling is once again expected to deputise and play alongside Nemanja Vidic at the heart of our defence.

We`ve no doubt that Smalling will again defy his young years to give a performance that ensured Sir Alex Ferguson had no qualms about paying a large fee for him last season.

On the eve of the game, Smalling has spoken to the press and has offered a few comments on a subject we touched on yesterday, the result in Marseille that has left us open to the away goals rule, commenting,

"It`s a bit of a dangerous score-line with the way the away goals rule works."

"It makes things interesting for the neutrals but nerve-wracking for the players and the fans."

"From our point of view we need to keep things tight at the back because if they score it`ll mean we need to score twice."

"You don`t want to risk conceding the away goal, but I think the manager will want us to go at them. Being at home is a massive advantage for us and we`re confident of going out there and getting a result."

If we`re looking towards another Champions League win then Marseille are, without a doubt, the kind of opposition we should be sweeping aside quite easily, despite all our reservations.

I think Marseille are really underrated. They're a strong, physical, athletic side who are never swept easily. Smalling was brilliant on the occassion again though but I do feel he needs that defensive leader next to him. Next to Brown we weren't defensively convincing.
