United - Smalling Stars (Again)

Rio Ferdinand may well have been out injured again, and is also expected to miss the clash with Wigan this weekend, but his under-study continues to impress.

Last night Chris Smalling was unfazed by the partisan atmosphere inside the Marseille ground and once again produced an accomplished display that added further proof to the ongoing discussion that Sir Alex Ferguson has found somebody, albeit at a decent cost, to fill the boots of Rio.

In fact, Chris`s recent performances have had Sir Alex purring with the boss providing the following accolade,

"He was excellent again. The boy likes defending and gave a great demonstration of centre-half play."

Is anyone else of the opinion that Smalling has leapt ahead of Evans, O`Shea and Brown when it comes to being under-study for Vidic and Ferdinand?

He has been brilliant and I can see him and Evans, if their progression continues as expected, taking over the defensive duties after Ferdinand and Vidic. Evans has had a bit of a set back with his form but just watching him cover for Vidic and Ferdinand pre-Smalling and you can see he has got the makings of a brilliant defender.

olive branch to TF7. smalling has been outstanding in the last few games i have seen him albeit against reasonably poor attacking teams but you can only perform against whats in front of you. hes going to be top quality. evens i am not sure about though he seems to be more of a midtable defender he may prove me wrong we will wait and see
