United Will Not Risk Ferdinand

Manchester United make the long trip to the south of France without Rio Ferdinand.

Our sources are informing us that despite it being, at one stage, probable that Rio would be in contention for selection as we attempt to progress to the last eight of the Champions League, he will not be risked.

In fact it is looking more and more like Rio will also not be risked in the weekend clash with Wigan but will, instead, be saved for the high-octane away clashes with Chelsea and Liverpool.

We expect Chris Smalling to deputise.

As long as Smalling puts in a shift like he did against City then i'm not overly worried, it would also do his development wonders especially with Ferdinand giving him advice.
