United - Ferguson Gracious in Defeat!

I suppose the unbeaten run had to end some time but who`d have thought it would end at Upton Park in such dramatic fashion.

After the ninety minutes of torture had ended I guess I wasn`t the only one left shell-shocked by our total capitulation to a side that are currently floundering in the relegation zone.

Sir Alex Ferguson, having seen his plans of winning the Carling Cup for a third successive time dashed, faced the press, after the debacle, remarking,

"I didn`t expect that, that`s for sure. The goals were absolutely too soft. You can`t give away goals like that at this level. There were young players out there and there is probably a lesson for them in it."

"We have invested in youth and they will come out of this and remember today. But it was a quarter-final tie and we had a real good opportunity of winning the cup again."

"I just don`t think you can judge West Ham`s League position on tonight. They were really fired up."

They certainly were and I guess the difference was, we were not!
