'If It's Football, It's Vital'

United - Fergie`s Successor?

It`s a question that is going to continually crop up, just who will be the successor to Sir Alex Ferguson!

We`re sure that may names will be thrown into the hat, even though it should be pointed out that Sir Alex has given no indication of if and when he`s likely to retire.

This morning, in the red top press, our chief executive, David Gill, has spoken about the importance of ensuring the right man is hired when Sir Alex finally decides to put his feet up, remarking,

"It`s obviously crucial that the main person at any football club, or an NFL team I suppose, is the coach."

"What happens on the pitch is crucial to all our off-the-field aspirations and we have to understand that."

"So someone coming in to take over Manchester United will have to have that pedigree, will have to have that logical success and achievement as it`s such a big club."

"But I think the other key asset, or key requirement for someone coming in, is to understand the history and heritage of the club."

"They need to understand how we work commercially, what we aim to achieve to get the right balance there and make sure we can continue as seamlessly as possible as we have under Sir Alex."

"Those are the things, but identifying that person is not easy."

"I`m sure we will get it right when that time comes, but I stress we don`t know when that is."


Fine words indeed but one thing concerns me, acknowledging that the manager / coach is the most pivotal person in the whole organization and that success on the field is of paramount importance, is there not a huge gap in our forward thinking and associated five year plan, a gap that could leave us with a bloody nose!
