United - Thankful For A Point!

Yesterday provided the perfect opportunity for United to issue a statement of intent, but they came up short.

After playing out a drab 0-0 draw in midweek, against Manchester City, journeying to Villa Park to play an injury hit Aston Villa side, should have seen us wrap up the points and close the gap on the current leaders, Chelsea, to a single point.

But it never happened as United, in the end were grateful to come back to Old Trafford with a share of the spoils, having taken two points out of the six available for their two recent away games, so what did Sir Alex Ferguson make of it?

In his post match press interview, Sir Alex remained quite candid about events and seemed pleased to have wrestled a point back after being 2-0 down, when he remarked,

"It was carelessness on our part. Our passing was poor. Normally we control the match but today we didn`t"

"They could have got six goals in the second half. We were all over the place at times."

"They hit the woodwork three times and missed a couple of great chances and then scored twice."

And as for changing things when things were really lacklustre, Sir Alex added,

"I could have taken any of 10 players off because we didn`t perform well."

"We came back well but it was too late and we shouldn`t have been in that position. I expected us to do better. We did create chances in the first half and we should have done better with them. It is a concern to wait 80 minutes for a shot."

"But if you go two down with ten minutes to go you have to be pleased with a point."

I`ll reserve judgement on that because if Chelsea beat Sunderland this afternoon we`re looking at a six point gap!

When asked about Liverpools F.A cup chances this season Steven Gerrard joked,"I guess you could compare us to Audley Harrison." Yes Stevie you're **** and you won't make it past the third round."
