United - 40 Today!

Time will catch up with Edwin van der Sar one day, it`s inevitable!

But, at the moment, he`s still our number one choice between the sticks and will remain so for the foreseeable future, despite today being his 40th birthday.

Although he`s hit the magical 40 mark, Edwin is still an ambitious man and wants to finish this season in a blaze of glory, by helping Manchester United to a record 19th title.

Speaking to the media, ahead of the clash with Spurs this weekend, Edwin has commented to the tabloid press about his situation and his desires remarking,

"We want to get the Premier League title back, that`s for sure."

"We narrowly missed out last season, although we had loads of injuries and lost too many games."

"I think that`s the priority. And of course we went out of Europe too early last season, so that has to be one of the focus points. When I was younger, I thought maybe I would finish in my mid-30`s, but that`s a normal time to be thinking about it when you are younger and for players at this level."

"That would have been the obvious time to finish, but I only came to United late in my career and maybe that`s while I`m still enjoying it."

Rumours persist that this will be his last season, with these rumours possibly fuelled by the fact that United are being linked with so many keepers in the transfer market. But, I have a sneaking suspicion that Edwin will give it one more year and we could be revisiting this scenario all over again this time next season!

Though the idea of VDS being solid at the back for another year a part of me wants him to retire so we can sort out the GK position sooner rather than later and ensure a solid keeper for many years to come.

Another Dutch keeper in Stekelenburg won't be that bad for us,it would just pass the responsibility from an old dutch to a young dutch keeper.
