United - Focussing on Rooney and Rio!

United - Focussing on Rooney and Rio!

I suppose the only saving grace on what was a severely below par from an injury hit side last night, was that Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand both came through unscathed.

Rio, grasping back the captains` armband after returning from injury, had very little to do as Montenegro rarely threatened, often packing nine men behind the ball. However, in the first half, the cultured defender was called upon to produce one scything tackle that saw Rio take the ball, and the man, leaving his opponent in a crumpled heap on the Wembley turf.

Rooney still looking far from being back to his best, huffed and puffed and often struggled to see much of the ball as England failed to produce too many penetrative passes. Often Rooney dropped deep to collect the ball but upon turning found the way forward blocked by nine red-shirted Montenegro players.

He fared slightly better in the second half and it`s possibly fair to say that he was deprived of a Wembley goal, by a fantastic one handed save by the keeper, that if it had of gone in could quite easily have changed the outlook on the whole evening.

After the game Fabio Capello had this to say about Rooney`s performance,

"He played a normal game. He had two chances and twice the goalkeeper was really good. The second was a fantastic save for their goalkeeper."

Hopefully, Rooney`s form will pick up a little more in our home clash with West Bromwich Albion this weekend.

How well you break down a defending team defines the best team's and players from the ones that challenge.
