Okay, it wasn`t the best of starts but it could have been worse!
Whilst everyone thought we`d be able to brush aside Rangers, that didn`t turn out to be the case.
In hindsight it`s easy to look in the direction of Sir Alex Ferguson and criticize his team selection but the eleven who started are all decent enough professionals who Sir Alex obviously thought were up to the job.
It`s amazing how some supporters, even before a ball had been kicked were harping on about Sir Alex having gotten confused between the Carling Cup and Champions League with his team selection.
So it was a gamble that didn`t come off, the situation isn`t irreversible, we`ve still five games to go to grab one of the two top spots and it`s quite within our grasp.
Speaking in the news conference following the 0-0 draw, Sir Alex had this to say about his team selection,
"We were not short of players out there to win a game of football."
"The criticism will be that I did not play a stronger team - but I played a very strong team."
"Eight of them played against Chelsea in the Charity Shield, they should have won that game."
Perhaps a slight acknowledgement in that he may have gotten his Plan B wrong, came in the comments that related to Dimitar Berbatov not even being on the bench with Javier Hernandez having been selected,
"We wanted to see how Javier Hernandez would do in a full game."
"Because of that we left Berbatov out. He has been one of our best players this season and his ability to create in tight situations would have made the difference."
But as a former Rangers player, Sir Alex, was quick to praise the opposition even though their tactics of getting everyone, bar Kenny Miller, behind the ball, frustrated our side and fans alike,
"You have to give credit to Rangers, their system was difficult to break down."
All it would have needed would have been one spark, one moment of sublime ingenuity and none of the above conversation would have taken place.
It`s a strange game we adore isn`t it?
