'If It's Football, It's Vital'

United - Ferdinand is Still Captain?

Sidelined by injury, Rio Ferdinand can only watch on as the tabloid media goes into a frenzy about how well Steven Gerrard has done since taking over the captaincy role.

Somewhere amongst all the praise it gets conveniently forgotten that the opposition since England returned from South Africa 2010 has been 'easy` to say the least.

But is Rio fearful of not getting the captains armband back when he returns to the international fold?

Apparently not with Rio, when asked by the media about the situation recalled a conversation Fabio Capello had about re-instating his captain, remarking,

"I think Capello said that a while ago."

"I think he answered it the last time the squad were together."

Now we can`t help thinking the application of the word 'think` a couple of times might confuse the issue.

But is being the captain of England such a big thing? If we look at some quotes attributed to Fabio really you`d think not, with the Italian remarking,

"For me the performance of the player is important, not the armband. It is not a priority for me. The armband is not important."

I wonder how a certain John Terry would feel about those remarks?

Rio, however, has unfinished business and still yearns to lead his country at a major tournament, further commenting,

"Leading your country at a tournament like that is an honour. I did not get to fullfil that."

Will he get the chance to do that at the European Championship Finals in 2012? It`d take a brave man to say 100 per cent yes!

"Gerrard and England have been amazing since wearing the armband", he wore it during the world cup and I dont think they were calling him or any of them amazing. If Ferdinand can stay fit for five minutes and show he can still perform then he should by all means retain his captaincy.
