'If It's Football, It's Vital'

United - Smalling Can`t Believe His Luck!

Over in North America, in a squad deprived of those who took part in the 2010 World Cup, Sir Alex is having to give some of the youngsters a chance.

One of these is our recent multi-million pound signing from Fulham, Chris Smalling.

Smalling, a centre back, has played in both United`s pre-season fixtures so far and in an interview with the watching media, talked about several key points.

The first of these being his meteoric rise to fame,

"It`s fair to say that things have changed at a pretty quick rate and I hope it keeps on going."

"Two years ago, I started pre-season in Kent playing against Whitstable - now I`m here with Manchester United."

But does Smalling see himself as an integral part of the first team squad, the answer appears to be positive with Chris remarking,

"The manager has said that I`m not just a youngster coming from another club but part of the first team and I have to be ready when I`m called upon. And I have confidence in terms of my game to do it."

But what of the man whose place he`s currently occupying, Rio Ferdinand, Chris had these words to say,

"I`ve watched Rio`s progress over the years, how he`s progressed into one of the finest. Hopefully, I can learn from him."

We doubt if there`s a better master for the pupil to study, do you?

I disagree, Sir Alex knows what he's doing!

As long as he shows this determination throughout his career he can not only replace Ferdinand be better than him aswell.

The fact that two of the most experienced managers in the league were both after him really says a lot about his ability/potential. I think he's got a very good chance of becoming a very solid centre back for us in the future.

Smalling reminds me a bit of Titus Bramble - capable of the odd flash of genius, but drops a clanger every other game. It's only now that Bramble has matured that he's cut out the mistakes and become a reasonable defender. Not sure you've got time to wait for Smalling to mature.
