After the disappointment of Friday evening, the nation needs Wayne Rooney to come good.

Prophecies that this could be his tournament have fallen by the wayside and seemed to be wide of the mark, question marks about his fitness have also surfaced, but Fabio Capello has been quick to dismiss these, commenting,

"Rooney is certainly fit. In training you have to send him to the dressing room."

"Every time, he wants to stay on the pitch longer than all the other players."

"He is perfect when it comes down to fitness. It is not a problem of fitness; it is a problem of the mind."

Ouch, some accusation there Fabio! Perhaps you should give Sir Alex a call about how to get the best out of our nations` gem.

Continuing though, Fabio dropped a hint that Rooney`s selection for the crucial game, against Slovenia, isn`t guaranteed, further remarking,

"Rooney is not untouchable and I can also change things during the game."

Please don`t tell me he intends pairing Crouch and Defoe as the England train appears to be coming off the rails!

It might just be what roo needs, dropped for a game and to fight to get his place back tho somehow i don't think it has much to do with roo(his porr form) as much as the predictable, and easy to beat formation that capello has been using...

I too shudder at the thought of a Crouch/Defoe partnership. But in all honesty - Wayne Rooney was an embarrassment on Friday. The worst of a bad bunch. How many England games is that now Wayne? He's gonna end up being the new Lampard - Great for club Sh1t for England. I never ever want to hear his name heard along side Messi's and Ronaldos ever again. Truley great players do it for club and country such as your Bergkamps, Shearers, Zidanes etc. Apart from a very promising Euro 2004 i dont remember him ever taking control of a game that truley matters for England. I mean jesus even Heskey looks better than him at the moment.

Clearly Cappello is not getting the best out of Rooney, as he is a shadow of his real self and that doesn't happen wherever he plays

He must play alone up front with Cole, Gerrard and Lampard/Lennon playing off him. Play Barry and Milner/Carrick as DMs.

4-5-1 would be my decision: James, Johnson, Terry, Dawson, Cole, Lennon, Barry (DM), Gerrard & Lampard (AM, either side of Rooney), Cole, Rooney. I know Dawson isn't proven but from what i've seen on his day he's ore capable than Upson and is much less a liability than Carragher. I would'nt drop Rooney, not for a much as vital as this one, there's a time when a lesson needs to be taught but now is not the time also i believe the Fergie chat will do him justice. Despite Terry's recent comments he needs to be played, God help us if Dawson and Upson are at the back together, I mean we need a bit of World Class in defense.
