United - Carrick on That Ball!

With the big kick-off scheduled for 15:00 hours tomorrow (Friday), one aspect of South Africa 2010 remains unanswered.

Much has been made of the new ball being used in this tournament with the media publishing concerns from various worried players.

In fact it`s hard to find a decent word written abut it and when the action starts tomorrow it`ll be interesting to see if it does behave any different from those we`re used to.

In training players have been using the new ball to get used to it and Manchester United`s Michael Carrick has stepped forward with his own observations on th subject in the media this morning.

Carrick, who probably won`t be in the starting eleven against the USA on Saturday, remarked,

"The ball`s not great. You just can`t trust it really."

"You set it off in one direction and it does its own thing. It makes keepers look pretty silly."

"As a midfielder, you feel that once you play it wide and put air into it, it`s anybody`s guess what will happen. It`s really light."

"Even from outside the box you fancy your chances if you get it on target, with rebounds and things. It makes it so risky for the keepers."

I guess that come 15:00 tomorrow afternoon those first few shots will tell us a lot. Have those who sanctioned the new ball got it right or will it all become a gigantic lottery?

The ball is supposed to be extremely aerodynamic, clearly they want this World Cup to be remember for great goals rather than great football.

This happens every time anew version of the ball is released, none of the outfield players will be complaining though...
