And there was I preaching that Wayne Rooney was a changed man and that his self-restraint had shown remarkable improvement.
How was I supposed to know that England`s finest was to have a massive rant at the referee in a meaningless friendly?
Thankfully, the referee, Jeff Selogilwe, who took charge of the England fixture against the Premier Stars, didn`t brandish a red card and send Rooney off for a verbal transgression.
However, after the game he was very quick to suggest that a similar occurrence from our star striker would see him sent off in the 2010 World Cup. He was also quick to admit that Rooney also holds a special place in his heart though when he commented to the media afterwards,
"Rooney insulted me, he said F*ck you."
"He must learn to control his temper. He could get sent off in the World cup, especially if he uses this kind of language."
"If he insults a referee like me, then he will use that vulgar language to other referees as well."
"Maybe the England players thought 'This is a friendly we can do what we like and the referees are not that professional."
"It`s a shame. He is a good player when you see him on the TV, but when you see him on the pitch, he just keeps insulting the referees."
"To me it looks like Rooney insults people and fouls other players."
"So I was very disappointed in Rooney because he is my favourite player."
All fair enough in an age when the buzz word is RESPECT
But knowing he`d stepped over the line, Wayne was quick to make amends as Jeff Selogilwe continues,
"Actually he is still my favourite player. He apologized to me and gave me the shirt he was wearing."
Careful Wayne, you know they`re just waiting for the chance to get a bit of personal glory these FIFA appointed referees in 2010!
