A Dirty Trick to Wind Rooney Up?

One aspect of Wayne Rooney`s game that has improved over the past twelve months has been his self control.

Sure, Wayne is prone to the odd snarl and the odd lunging tackle still but they are few and far between.

Nevertheless, with memories of how Portugal disrupted his tournament last time out still relatively fresh, the USA legendary defender, Alexi Lalas, seems to think that Wayne will be susceptible to a similar occurrence of recklessness this time out when he comments to the media,

"You must use everything to your advantage. I hope he has a temper tantrum, has a swing at someone and gets thrown out. I`d love to see him act like a baby. That would be fine with me."

"This is all part of gamesmanship, recognizing the weaknesses and the flaws of individual players and teams."

In our book it stinks of dirty tricks but we think you`ll find, like we suggested, Wayne isn`t the same reckless player you might think he is!

Not really dirty, a bad temperament is a bad temperament, people will take advantage of the fact and it is fair. It's part of the game. Thankfully he has sobered down after the baby.

I dont think Rooney will let his temper get the best of him he's grown up alot since he threw his last tantrum at the Euro.

I have been very impressed with Rooney over the last few years, he has reduced his tantrums which is good to see well done. He still will get sent off in the world cup though, he just can't help it, some of the other teams will know this and pull the wrong strings.

Don't forget, Lalas is from the land of Ice-hockey, where players deliberately goad the opposition into taking a swing - he may be a big thick ginger barsteward with a silly beard, but he's just talking about what he knows. Rooney still has it in him to lose it at times, but now he's grown up a bit I'm sure it would take a helluva lot to get him going.

There you go the beast inside awakens. Looking good for a sending off in first few matches just like Beckham. BBC web site "This was what Capello will want to see from Rooney in the World Cup - but there was also a worrying example of the dark side of his character that lurks beneath the surface and which he must keep under wraps if England are to flourish in South Africa."
