United - Capello on Rio Injury!

After it had been announced that Rio Ferdinand had picked up a knee injury and would miss the World Cup a sense of disbelief swept around the country.

Here we were, going into the 2010 World Cup, and we`d lost our captain a mere six days before the tournament was due to start.

It`s a bitter pill to swallow, especially for Rio, but one which the side can, we hope, recover from.

Fabio Capello, naturally shocked to lose his skipper, remarked about the events of the day to reporters,

"It`s the curse of being captain. We have t o pray now; help us, no more."

"Rio felt a big, big pain in the knee. All the players here are important, but he`s one of the starting players, the captain, a leader."

"It couldn`t have been much worse on my first day. The other players were upset. They stopped training."

"It is bad news and everyone is very disappointed and sorry for Rio. It was accidental, nothing to do with the pitch."

The accident does, of course, mean the Manchester United contingent in the squad is reduced to two, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney. Let`s hope they can stay injury free.
