United - Rio`s Dream Is Over!

After being taken to the local hospital for scans on his injured knee and being seen leaving on crutches, more news is now available.

Sadly, it has been announced that Rio Ferdinand will play no further part in the preparations or in the actual World Cup.

It is expected that England will call up Michael Dawson, of Spurs, to replace him.

My goodness, there goes England's WC dreams.. Bad news for all English fans. Dawson's solid, but he's no Rio. Even though he's a thugh and I don't particularly like him, Rio is a good CB at the end of the day. Wonder who'll get the Captain's armband now- Terry for Captain!!! lol :P
JT_daniel - You could stop wondering, its going to go to Gerrard.
well that sucks. He must feel devestated.
Default Captain- Gerrad. *smirk*
I guess it's not much of a surprise, really. He was injured for quite some time during the season.. Dawson-JT? Hmm..
red boy- That poll is really funny- It doesn't have a question but has three options. :)
Personally i would prefer Lampard to have the captains armband over Gerrard. Lampard gives his all every game, inspires his team mates, has a good work rate and is EXTREMELY consistent. Gerrard however ... just look at Liverpools position to see the lifting affect he has on his team. Dawson is a good defender and this would be a really big chance for him.
Thats England for you, things can never go smoothly, can they?
Antriksh (abmtd)
TFN7-You could bring in even Roy Keane to that Liverpool team and their position wouldn't change. There is something called as talent and unfortunately there is not much talent in that team but I respect your choice, for me I too would go for Gerrard. You just have to look at the Istanbul game,he single-handedly brought Liverpool back from the dead.
Antriksh (abmtd)
Ledley king will step in and replace him, but if he cant play every game england could be in trouble. International football is all about having centre backs who are good on the ball - its the only way to keep possession. King and Rio are our only two with that kind of ability. I really hope this doesnt drag over into next season for United. Damn you emile heskey!
TF7- Great shout mate. Lamps deserves it, but unfortunately he's got a lower media profile than Gerrad- Again, another media-inspired derailment of England's WC chances. And antriksh, what else other than that CL finals?! An inspired 7th placed finish last season? The WC is in 2010 mate not 2005!
Well theres the customary England injury, wouldn't be a world cup without it. Hope to christ he doesn't start Carragher now, has to be King/Upson
Rio was always a gamble was he not?
Gerrards vice captain isnt he? So its a given that he gets the armband, probably with Rooney vc
Rooney for VC? You're having a larf. Hope it's Lamps, if purely for the experience he pocesses. And nice1emile, you mean your name?? :)
Yes Rio was always gamble because of a back injury that seems to trouble him randomly. However, you cant really legislate for a fat ***** like emile heskey ruining your knee.

In theory heskey could have done that to anybody - but in practice Rio is the only england centre back with real ability on the ball. Terry, Carragher, Upson or Dawson would have toe punted the ball away long before Heskey weighed in with the tackle of death. Essentially, Rio has payed a high price for his superior talent and emile heskeys lack of it.
May as well shut shop, Ledley can't play more than a couple of games continuously and Dawson, as good as he is, not exactly a like for like replacement. Dempsey and Donovan lining up the cutlery?
Emile has certainly put his stamp on the WC!!
JT_daniel-You have your choice mate,I have mine.I don't know how u can judge Gerrard's captaincy in this Liverpool team. Its plain rubbish,I guess every Liverpool supporter will agree on that. The fact that he has carried Liverpool for so long and kept them in the top 4 is a miracle in itself.
Antriksh (abmtd)
That is a pity for Engerland! In fairness, I'd have Ledley King starting before Dawson or Upson. He's a top player and for anyone thats played football will agree, to get to play at that level is a remarkable achievement but to play at that level and not be able to train is phenomenal. The only other player i've seen do that is a certain Paul Mc Grath and he probably gave the best performance i've ever seen from a centre half at the world cup in 94 when he single handedly lead ireland to victory against italy. So Rio is a miss, but don't be too quick to write off King just yet!!! Just ask Roberto Baggio about players who cant train!!!
Lamps has been better.
King's a top bloke and a great footballer (don't tell the spurs guys that I admitted this... lol)
JT_daniel I agree, and I picked my Engerland starting 11 for a football pool a few weeks ago before the prelim squad and King was in there ahead of Rio to begin with.He was asthonising in the latter half of the season, imagine if he could train!!!
Wouldn't really wanting him training with EH though..... Great footballer when fit, big when....
Unlucky for Rio but a great chance for his replacement.
SFC Forever
Who'll get the nod to replace him? Upson?
King I reckon!
Al Billy
We all knew Ferdinand was a liability with his back and all, but for him to injure his knee is really taking the p155. And Antriksh I understand where you're coming from but this Liverpool team is only slightly different to that which challenged for the title last year. I respect the fact that Liverpool were severely off form but its not fair, in my opinion, to brand them as having a lack of talent players such as: Torres, Kuyt, Johnson, Carragher, Agger, Reina, Mascherano, Aquilani, Maxi Rodriguez and Benayoun can hardly be described as lacking talent. If Gerrard can't inspire this team to perform well, which we all know they can do (look at the way they perform against us for example) then how can we expect him to inspire England? How is it fair a player who has had such a disappointing season himself and his team be given captaincy over Lampard who has been truelly inspirational, consistent (20 goals a season!) and who has the same good work rate as Gerrard?
Also this World Cup appears to be breaking alot of dreams, Beckham won't get to play and achieve his status as 'the player that has appeared in the most world cups for England'. Ferdinand wont get lead his country to the World Cup and Owen also has missed out on his last chance to get into the World Cup sqaud, both Owen's that is.
On current form there are many better players on offer. He was never fully fit and its better breaking down now rather than during a match. He's not a leader anyway, too egotistical better biting the bullet and give it to the only captain on the team, Terry.
King ability wise is the best in the country, but can he play and maintain performance twice a week at the very highest level? Lets hope so...
ANd the captain should be Gerrard. Terry is the biggest cockhead in the premiership
King is a very good defender but he's more of a cripple than Ferdinand!
There are only a few certainties wrt players who have a chance of leading the team getting picked, Rooney, Gerrard, Lampard, Terry and Cole. Picking a captain out of these..... Only two have shown they can, Stevie Me and Tiny Tears, as much as I dislike them, Ingurland does not have many options.
His name is Rio and he watches from the stands.
