United - Rio on the Midfield Conundrum!

United - Rio on the Midfield Conundrum!

Amongst the plethora of questions Rio got asked by the media hacks following the win over Japan related to that old conundrum about Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard being paired together in midfield.

It`s a combination that has been tried, tested and a combination that still provokes arguments about whether they can play together. As the national captain Rio remained very tactful when replying to the probing question, remarking,

"I`ve never had any doubt Steve and Frank can play together. They both did against Japan."

"It worked very well and we looked very dangerous."

"Whether it is just down to those two or whether other players have to do stuff I don`t know. But good players can play anywhere and play with any players. We have seen that in the past. It is the same with them. It is where the manager sees them both in the team. Will he play them together? We`ll have to wait and see."

Interestingly, they are very similar views to those made by Fabio Capello, is it a sign of possible unity in the camp?

What your verdict? Can England succeed with a midfield pairing of Lampard and Gerrard or was Rio just being very tactful?

Gerrard and Lampard in midfield you would've thought to be a dream pairing which could carry any team through thick and thin, i mean they do it individually for their clubs so there's no reason why they cant do it for their country.

They could if they have someone doing the dirt work behind them. Would have to be a three man midfield.
