United - Carrick Ponders His Fate!

Decision day with regards to the naming of the 23 man squad to go to South Africa draws ever nearer.

Already one of our own, Michael Carrick, is tipped as a possible candidate for exclusion.

Carrick has had, by his standards, a disappointing season and failed to make the spectacular impact he`d hoped for in the recent friendly with Mexico.

Knowing that the reduction from a 30 man squad to a World Cup party of 23 is certain t be a painful affair and it`s something that Michael has remarked about ahead of what could be a heartbreaking day, when he remarks to the tabloid media,

"Monday could be a bit of a long day but that`s just how it is. You can`t get yourself too worked up about it."

"You`ve just got to do your best and then it`s up to the manager."

"If you`re putting all sorts of pressure on yourself, it`s not going to do you any good."

"Obviously everyone`s praying they are in the squad."

"It`s not going to be easy for the manager."

"I wouldn`t like that job, to cut people out, but that`s the business."

Let`s hope that fortunes smiles on our Michael!

The way he has played this season, he doesn't deserve to be in most squads. Xavi and Iniesta really did a number on him!

The words spectacular and Carrick do not belong on the same planet, never mind sentence. No way by many miles is he an international player. in fact I find myself asking, what is Carrick for?

As a United fan I want to disagree adlington2, but after what I've seen this year - I can't. He can't tackle, he has no pace, he doesnt have exceptional stamina, he cant shoot, he cant take set pieces, his defensive positioning is average at best, he cant dribble, he cant head, he doesnt have great drive or energy, he has no composure, he isnt inspiriational vocally or by example and his biggest asset - his passing - has become sloppy, inaccurate and inconsistent. As an england fan I dont want him anywhere near the final 23. My only hope as a United fan, is that being dropped from the 23 will cause him to re-evaluate his performances and then show some real improvement next season. If he doesnt, surely Hargreaves, Fletcher, Anderson, Scholes, Gibson and that creative player we're looking for will all get into the team ahead of him.

Based on the fact that he came into a team which hadnt won the league for years and then won 3 straight with him in the side, we owe him the chance to redeem himself - but he REALLY needs a wholescale shift from what we've seen this year.

Past glory cannot be a yardstick, he has to put in a shift, there is no place to hide on the field!

tuscan3000, my sentiments exactly.I whole heartedly agree. In fairness he's had a bad season but he has performed in the past and he has won three titles in a row but this season he's been awful to say the least. He is a quiet player and goes about his business with no fuss , and having played semi pro myself i do appreciate the pace of the game and his passing ability because its very easy to sit here and critise but unless you've been there it seems easy to the average fan! I'm just making a point but i agree imo he doesn't warrent a place in the final 23 if it really is based on justice!!

If Gareth Barry doesn't make it back to fitness in time then I suspect Carrick will make it out of pure desparation (though I'd rather have seen someone like Huddlestone take his place)

Java, I agree. I was just having the same conversation with a friend the other day. Michael Carrick has been 'rubbish' by comparison to his own previous form and that of others in the team. But in reality, purely being part of a premier league squad makes him one of the elite players in world football. Whilst people like Carrick, Walcott and Bramble will get stick - they are obviously still incredibly talented in the wider context of the abilities of those in the amateur game. But still, he's not playing me every week - he's playing people like essien and fabregas - and compared to them he's currently rubbish ;) lol

He needs to get cut from the team he can' t go after such poor performances and in my opinion neither should Walcott. Both players really need to sort out their game but in the case of Carrick by his own standards and the fact the he is no longer a developing player really doesnt have an excuse.

He looks like he's got the Yips and people rarely recover from those!
