United to Snatch Joe Cole!

One of the leading red-tops seems quite convinced that Manchester United could be about to lure Joe Cole away from Stamford Bridge.

Cole, who has yet to agree a new contract with Chelsea and becomes a free agent on 1st July, is currently with the England squad preparing for the World Cup in South Africa.

Being a free agent, United would not have to pay any transfer fee and could provide the sort of salary that Cole is hanging out for at Chelsea.

Could this deal work?

Could Joe Cole provide the play-making spark to see us regain the Premier League title?

would be a good buy

Not for me. He's a good player, who would be capable of playing in the hole like Park did against milan - but obviously he has more quality on the ball than park. However, I'm not convinced he really has that vision and intricate passing ability we're looking for. Looking at players like David Silva, Mesut Ozil and Luka Modric - they're constantly trying to thread little passes through to the strikers and I'm not sure Joe Cole can really match their standards in that aspect. Even players like Hamsik and Jovetic would be preferable because what they lack in assists they'd make up with goals. Players like Gourcuff, Costa and Hazard would also be preferable because of their superior dribbling abilities. With his injury record, he really isnt the ideal signing. He'd be my last resort when it comes to attacking midfield signings. In fact, the only reason I'd really want us to get him is if we were spending the rest of the money on someone expensive like Rodwell, Toure or Benzema.

I wouldnt be disappointed if we do end up signing him, but I would feel that we could have done better.

Chelsea won the title despite, rather than because of Joe Cole. For most of the season, he was injured. The rest of the time he was a waste of a squad number. He's holding out for silly, and totally unjustified money. You are welcome to him.
EuroBlue
Goodluck with him fellows,he has nothing more to offer us.
alex6
I would take him as a Hail Mary, would rather have someone with more creative vision and the legs to carry it out.
elvido
I agree EuroBlue. His demands are totally unjustified and i dont think i'd like to see him in a United shirt! He didn't really contribute anything to your title success this season! Honestly,if I was Capello i'd take Johnson to the World Cup way ahead of Cole! But i'm not Capello and thats why i'm sitting at my computer with a beer at 4 a.m :)
java
didnt contribute anything? he scored the only legitimate goal in the biggest game of the season, united v chelsea. chelsea fans are just trying to make themselves feel better about losing him
Reddevils4ever89
In fairness chelsea fans have been pretty unimpressed with him all season. Though I have to say, the fact that Joe Cole got 6 assists in the league despite his limited playing time shows he isnt an awful player by any means. Players like Modric(3), Nasri(4), Benayoun(5) and Gerrard(7) all played a lot more than him.
tuscan3000
All things being said.. I'd still be very surprised if Joey goes over to your side..
SLampard
I agree, I think he just wants a new contract in line with his mates. If he cant get it, he'll probably sign anyway. But after watching him play in behind rooney today, I have to say he wouldnt be the worst signing we could make on a free.
tuscan3000
No, he wouldn't, would be a good squad addition at best.
elvido
Can't see Joe Cole leaving the bright lights of Larndarn town for any where north of the Watford gap, no matter what club is looking to sign him. JC gets a nose bleed if he exceeds a certain latitude, so would expect him to rock up with dodgy 'arry at Tottingham

Everyone has that impression of joe cole (including me to be honest). But once he comes to terms with the fact that northerners also breathe oxygen and that travelling from Manchester to London doesnt require any form of black magic, surely the chance of winning trophies alongside Rio, Carrick, Rooney, Owen, Hargreaves, Scholesy and Neville - under the guidance of the greatest club manager ever - will be more of an attraction than being a sub with Bentley, Crouch, Defoe and Huddlestone - even if it is with his old buddy Harry. After all, the likelyhood of spurs dropping Lennon, Modric or Bale for joe cole is surely quite slim? The choice will come down to his ambitions and whether he prefers hanging with Harry, to hanging with Rio, Carrick and Rooney - I'm gonna guess he'd rather go to United. Having said that - if his wages are crazy - he is more likely to stay at chelsea or go to spurs than come here.
tuscan3000
Firstly spurs dont pay crazy wages and I cant see Harry Redknapp making a 'one off' for a player who, in fairness, is no better than most of the Spurs squad when he's having an average game. I think Cole wouldn't be the worst signing in the world firstly a player of his quality is FREE. Secondly we all know if he were to sign for us Fergie wouldnt give him the wages he demands off of Chelsea. Thirdly on his day or even off it Cole is and can be a game changing player and his that little bit of spark we could use in the middle. No-one is wrong in saying we could do better with our current financial climate, why splash out 20 mil on a Hamsik or Silva, who may not adjust to the PL, when you can spend nothing more than wages and get an already proven talent. He would also give the younger players a chance to prove that they're Lampards, Gerrards or even Kaka's as he wont be here for too long whereas Silva, Hamsik or Modric will demand a place for a long time.
TheFamousNo7
In fairness Modric has signed a 6 year deal and Hamsik seems perfectly happy in italy. Whilst I would rather have Silva than Joe Cole - you're right that we could spend upto 30m for him find that Joe Cole could do an equal or better job for free. I think we'll end up buying a young player for 10m and then trying to get Joe Cole to fill the gap until that player is ready to step up.
tuscan3000
That sounds like a fair deal to me tuscan, someone who won't cost much but could be below 21 and be given a chance of proving himself and Joe Cole on a free would add quality and numbers to the squad.
