United - The Tightest Defence!

With it now being unlikely that United will be crowned Premier League Champions for a fourth time, with us clutching at straws as Sir Alex put it, Edwin Van der Sar has plucked a great statistic out of the doom and gloom.

As things stand, the United defence have conceded a mere 28 goals in the Premier League this season. Unless things go badly wrong against Stoke this weekend, it`ll be the second successive year that we`ve been the tightest defence in the land.

But what makes it even more of an achievement is, as Edwin points out, the turmoil we`ve suffered injury wise, in defence this season,

"That is very good; we also had it last year."

"It has been a bit back and forth this season with midfielders in defence and right-backs at left-back or whatever, and a couple of goalkeeping changes."

"It is a positive point to take into next season. Maybe we can improve the goals scored."

With another top notch striker on board we probably could!

I'll give you that one seeing as your defensive injuries mirror ours!

Considering we played Carrick, Fletcher and Giggs in defence at various points this year, I would say an excellent job!

Think you'll find Chelsea had an identical defensive record to yours last year. Both teams conceding 24 goals.

I think shouldnt demand anything less that its players. Every player they have in defense is world class, Terry, Carvalho, Alex, Zhirkov, Cole, Ivanovic, Bosingwa. So i think they have more than enough to cover every need. United on the other hand, have 3 world class defenders, Rio, Vidic, Evra, and the rest are on a bit lower level. Thats why united has done something commendable when playing 3 midfielders in defense for some games, and still has the best defensive record.

Thats an incredible achievement and backs exactly what I said at the start of the season. If United ever put out a our first choice back 5 with Hargreaves and Fletcher in front of them we'd hardly ever conceed. With Park and Valencia also in the ranks we'd be even more solid. If the team stays relatively fit or our injuries are spread out a little bit better (i.e. not all to the same position at the same time) I cant see us not putting forward a stronger challenge than this year. Our problems this year were obvious: Not enough of a goal threat from our backup strikers, not enough creativity/goal threat from midfield and bad luck in defence. Two signings could solve those problems.

tuscan3000, I agree, our problem in spite of injuries to defenders has been goal scorers!
