'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Michael Owen's Season Is Over

Michael Owen won't play again this season as his knee injury, picked up in the Carling Cup final, proved to be more serious than first thought. He'll have an operation on his knee on Monday and his World Cup dreams are over.

'It's a serious blow to him and we are disappointed, too, because he never missed a training all season,' said Sir Alex Ferguson today. The boss added that Federico Macheda has recovered and will start training with the first team next week.

With Owen out we are running out of options up front. Berbatov is playing with a slight injury while Rooney is a doubt for the Wolves game after Capello kept him on the field for 86 minutes against Egypt on Wednesday.

It could well mean a first ever league start for Mame Biram Diouf as we are light in midfield as well though Nani is back after his three-game ban. But things are not looking rosy, not at all...

Can't understand whether I should be happy or sad with the midfield looking a lot better with Nani back and giggsy coming back in the next week or two and hopefully Owen in the next month but I have to agree in the striking area with owen out now, hopefully Mame will take his chance.

such a shame, a great player with a totally blighted career due to injuries.
The Fear
Fergie may play only Berba up front? Hope Mame gets a chance too!

Im not too worried. I feel bad for Owen but we'll cope without him. It remains to be seen whether Fergie was just having a dig at the england camp by claiming Rooney is a doubt. Also, I really want Mame to get 90mins and wolves would be a good opportunity. We also have Berba, Macheda and Obertan who can all play up top so we arent short of strikers, especially as we seem to be playing 1 up top these days anyway.

My real concern is with Owen Hargreaves. Im desperate for him to play and feel comfortable with his knee on thursday. Even if he gets fit and only comes back with 50% of his tenacity he's a better holding player than anyone else in the england squad - and if we beat milan - we could do with him too.

I still believe that with a few games under their belts, a 4-3-3 of VDS, Brown, Rio, Vidic, Evra, Hargreaves, Fletcher, Carrick, Valencia, Park and Rooney would be impenetrable - even against barcelona!

he must be gutted - hope he does comeback but it must get harder every time!

Why is he having a knee operation on the hamstring injury he picked up in the CC Final?!?!?!?!

What happened to the "Genius" signing all my red acquaintances told me about? Can't say I have too much sympathy, as Owen kind of burned his bridges with me when he signed for you lot anyway, but it's kind of nice to be able to say "I told you so" to all the smug gits who were predicting that Owen would have a better season than Tevez.
fifthcolumnblue
i like michael owen and wished he would have made the WC squad but sadly he wont be going now
bluemooner_mcfc
fifthcolumnblue, Owen is having a better season than Tevez! 11 points better in the league, last 16 of the Champions league, won the league cup. Thats way better in my opinion as its a team game!!! He's contributed to that so thats better!!! Individual accolades mean sfa!!!

Its funny how City fans had nothing to say on the matter up until december. Despite their predictions about how permanently crocked he'd be and how we'd end up no where this season, the truth is he's maintained an excellent level of fitness, scored a brilliant winner against city in the league, scored a hattrick in a champions league game (which with the defense we put out - had no right to win), scored an equaliser in the carling cup final and has only really been out of the team because of how well we have done this season. He has had major impact on 3 results which have set us on our way to winning a treble. He's only scored one goal less than Bellamy (who most people would agree has had a good season) and has an almost identical strike rate to carlos tevez (both around 1 goal every 120mins). As much as he isnt my favourite player, considering his cost in terms of transfer fee and wages compared to a player like carlos tevez, I dont see how anyone could consider him a bad signing. As well as Tevez has done for city over the last few months, he doesnt have any medals so far this season, nor does he appear to have realistic prospects of getting any. Michael Owen does. I dont really see why fifthcolumnblue would possibly think he has anything to gloat about, but then City fans are used to inventing their own measures of success.

From a villa fan, such a shame for owen i backed him for world cup when he joined you lot but expected him to get more game time and tbf when he has played he has scored some vital goals (against city and against US! in the carling cup final) not forgettin grabbing a bunch against wolfsburg hatrick wansnt it? correct me if im wrong. He is a talent and if he went to south africa he could have been the player to bring on and grab a vital goal but we probably have bent and defoe to do that. his chances of going to the world cup now are realisticly 0. too bad!

Btw i didnt make much of that Diouf today and that comment from tuscan3000 about the 433 and playing hargreaves carrick and fletcher + valencia giggs/park and rooney WOW id back you for the league if you get every1 fit enough.
