Official: Smalling Set To Join United

United have confirmed the arrival of Chris Smalling. Earlier this day media reports claimed that the club have agreed a fee with Fulham for the 20-year-old defender; now it's official.

'Manchester United has agreed terms for the transfer of Chris Smalling from Fulham.

'Chris has agreed personal terms with the club and will join for the beginning of the 2010/2011 campaign. He will remain at Fulham until the end of the current season.'

Smalling is a talented, relatively stylish central defender, more Rio Ferdinand than Nemanja Vidic. He's one for the future, no doubt and we can have high hopes for him.

Welcome aboard, Chris, good luck for the rest of the season!

Smalling and Evans the new Rio and Vidic!

He must be pretty good as Wenger usually keeps his card close to his chest when it comes to transfers. The fact he was willing to come out and openly say "we're not giving up on this one" suggests he sees Smalling as the kind of young talent that is worth fighting for. Every time I see Aaron Ramsey play - I feel like weeping because we missed out on him. Hopefully Smalling and Diouf will go someway to making me feel better about it.

I'm sure at least one or two of these "Next big things" will turn out to be the "Next big thing". I remember the days when United signed players rather than prospects...

Yeah me too fcb! All those massive superstars we used to buy for 20M+ that did so well for us. Unfortunately, the game is changing. These days you either buy expensive youth and hope for the best or buy REALLY expensive "players" and watch them play for another club. With our finances we cant really afford to pay the wages of other teams players aswell. Still, with this new bond thing bringing in so much cash, maybe this summer we'll be able to bring in real "players" like shevchenko, crespo, jo or robinho. Im hoping for someone like aguero - if we pay 40M this summer we should be able to get him playing for Riverplate or Boca in plenty of time for the 2014 world cup.

TBH i'd rather them sign players that are worth the money than paying over the top amounts for players that turn out to be s***. Smalling will be a good player the fact that Wenger was after him says it all.

Has he signed on the dotted line? hmmm wait and see.

He is a very good prospect - just hope we dont have to sell any of our big name stars

i found it funny to see United fans asking for his autograph when he's actually scored an own goal for Chelsea earlier in the season which if he hadn't of scored would probably have meant they would now only have 49 pts, so ironically in a way he could lose United the title!
