'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Fergie's World Cup Verdict

Wayne Rooney has been left 'devastated' by his injury, but he is hoping that United's medical staff will help him recover for the latter stages of the World Cup.

Rooney: 'I know that with the physio team behind me at Manchester United they'll be giving me the best possible chance.

'Obviously I'm devastated to break my foot. At this moment in time it's horrible really, but you have got to get on with it, be positive, and try to get myself fit as soon as possible.'

Ferguson was furious when Sven-Goran Eriksson claimed he would be willing to name Rooney in his 23-man squad whether he has recovered fully or not.

Ferguson: 'We want Wayne at the World Cup as much as anyone because it would be a great credit to us if he performs properly on the world stage, which I am sure he would.

'But can you ask a player, no matter what standard, to play in the quarter-final of a World Cup after only two weeks' training? It is impossible.

'There are people now who think Wayne is a certainty to play in the World Cup. I think he is far from that.'
