Classy Goal But Not Much Else From United

Classy Goal But Not Much Else From United

United, playing a mixed team of youngsters, fringe players and first teamers, beat Wolves 1-0 despite playing 60 minutes with only 10 men on the pitch and got through to the next round of the Carling Cup. It won't be an extensive review of the game, only the main talking points of it.

Poor Fabio. Hopefully he will recover and learn from it but he made a big, stupid mistake. His clumsy attempt at a tackle was completely unnecessary as going a goal down is still somewhat better with 60 minutes to go than going a man down...

Nani beats just about any defender with ease when he's on form but his final ball is pathetic. At this rate he will never show more than glimpses.

Carrick had seemed to be recovering but after Fabio was sent off all his energies were focused on defending - a waste. Get well soon Michael, you're not a Carling Cup player, only when this badly short on confidence.

Darron Gibson's shooting was more wayward than usual. But a good performance from the reliable Irishman.

Owen did nothing at all apart from setting up Welbeck for the goal. That was classy though, a clever one-two and the impressive Mancunian youngster was through and slotted home with composure. Convincing display by Welbeck and his substitute Joshua King showed some potential: he's quick and a fine dribbler.

Defence was horrible - Gary Neville, Brown, Evans and of course poor Fabio all committed some incredible mistakes. Gary Neville slicing it horribly into Jones' way tops the lot though...

Where was Macheda? He barely touched the ball before his 30th-minute-withdrawal. Better luck next round son! His replacement Ritchie de Laet might not have the best positional sense in the world but he's quick, skilful and aggressive.

Kevin Doyle was very difficult to contain and Wolves could have forced extra time with a little more luck, we weren't very impressive with our mish-mash team. Oh well, we have, erm, Stoke away to look forward to.

I think the main reason why Owen failed to shine in this match was due to the poor service he was getting yet again. Nani seemed to take defenders on with ease - but many times failed to come up with the goods with the last pass. Owen was forever running into good positions in space - but the ball service was lacking. Poor Fabio - what can be said about this - he was tracking back and would have made the tackle but for that slip - stupidly he reached out with his arm in desperation, where Tomas may have made a save and even if we had gone 1 nil down, then we could still have come back into the game with the full quota of 11 men. It would have been Machedas nite to shine as well - but for Fabio being sent off - he was unable to show what he can really do. King - the 17 year old Norwegian had a couple of blistering runs, and was unlucky not to do better with his shot in front of the Stretford End - I cant wait to be sat there next week watching us score in that goal agaisnt Besiktas!!
