'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Rio: I Needed A Wake-Up Call

Rio Ferdinand admitted that he was a bit slow out of the blocks on his return from injury. Rio played his first game of the season at White Hart Lane on Saturday and he forgot to mark Defoe who gave Spurs the lead with a spectacular overhead kick in the very first minute.

'It was a bit of a wake-up call, it hits home the fact you're back playing in the first team again,' said Ferdinand.

'But we responded in the right manner, getting the ball down and playing some of our best football this season.'

Rio did not really wake up, in my opinion, until the second half - or, to be fair, he it took him that long to get into his stride again after his lengthy layoff. But it's true that the team as a whole responded superbly which is very, very encouraging ahead of the season - and Rio himself was masterful in the second half, especially when we were down to 10 men.
