Ronaldo Could Return To Old Trafford Soon

Ronaldo Could Return To Old Trafford Soon

Thirty-two clubs are awaiting their fate in the Champions League: the draw for the group stage takes place on Thursday, at 17.00. United are among the first seeds, of course but that does not mean we'll avoid all the biggest guns.

And I bet that fate (UEFA?) will throw up a meeting with Real Madrid who, owing to their pathetic performances in Europe in the last five years, are in the second pot. And of course that would send media hype into overdrive, what with Cristiano Ronaldo returning to Old Trafford.

It would be fun, really, seeing him again so soon but it might be more dramatic if the sides met only at the knockout stages. For me, a dream group would consist of Rangers, Olympiakos and Zürich - not very glamorous but meeting Rangers is always fun and we should really overcome the other two without serious problems.

But of course it could also be Real Madrid, Inter, Juventus or Lyon from the second pot and there are the likes of Atlético Madrid and Fiorentina in the third. Add Wolfsburg to these sides and we could end up with one hell of a group.

What I don't understand is how Bayern Munich is in Pot 1, but the current German champions are in Pot 4 lol.
27/08/2009 05:55:00
I wouldn't be surprised if it happened.

Its not the league performance that counts but your CL performances/achievements,thats why the gap between bayern and wolfsburg.

This has got to be one of the hardest champions league draws in years. The big guns have always tended to miss each other in groups. There is little chance of that happening this year what with England being the only nation having all their teams as the top seeds, the last 16 will not be what you would expect this year. Some big clubs are going to be disappointed come December.

Relatively happy with our group - CSKA Moscow, Wolfsburg and Besiktas - we could have come off a lot worse. Not saying they'll be easy ties (cos they won't) but we should get through that :) can't wait for the Champions League to be back... the Barcelona burden's been weighing on us for a long time.

Horrible draw we should win the group but the travel factor may effect our league chances. Arsenal got the perfect draw trips to Holland, Belgium and Greece. No ties that stand out either.
27/08/2009 19:39:00
Yeah, would have loved arsenals draw, but it could have been worse. We got the best team in pot 4 in wolfsburg but avoided Fiorentina and Real Madrid. Hopefully we can beat them all at OT and with them all feeling like they can take points off each other, we won't HAVE to beat them all away to top the group.
28/08/2009 00:39:00
Whilst you're away getting beaten in Europe just remember that Man City will start building a tidy little lead over you in the Premiership. The times have changed.
28/08/2009 04:26:00
Yeah that is the worry, NotoriousRedDevil - the ties don't look too bad on paper, but having to travel that far around before crucial league games (City and Liverpool for example) could really damage our Title chances. Tuscan3000, yes what i'm hoping. If we can get a couple of draws away perhaps, as long as we win all our home ties, we'll be fine. Sindbad, you can't build leads while we're away cos we're away midweek. Good start but how many times has the start to a season been misleading? We constantly struggle at the start, Hull were brilliant at the start last season, and fell away. At the end of the season, if you're in that position, fair enough. But it's a marathon not a sprint, and we've hardly done a mile yet! On the disruption from the Champions League, at least we sort of got used to that last year - we had the Super Cup missing a game, then we travelled all the way to Japan for the World Club Cup too.... and the other season we went on a mid-season break to Asia... it can be done. Fergie didn't sound optimistic, but he should use the schedule as motivation to whatever the problems, United can overcome them.
