Fergie Desperate To Talk Up Owen's Credentials

Sir Alex says that he's not concerned by the fans' opinion on Michael Owen getting the legendary number seven shirt. Well, I think it's not true: the fact that he's gone some way to justify his decision speaks volumes about his awareness of our opinions.

'The criteria for the number seven is quite clear,' he said.

'It is a jersey that has been worn by some high-profile players and we have that in Michael Owen.

'You have to choose someone you are confident can carry that on and his profile in the last decade has been outstanding.

'I am not concerned about what the supporters think - it is important to give it to someone who is confident and comfortable and he was a natural choice.'

It wasn't natural at all: it should have been given to someone who had the potential to be an inspiration to his teammates, who can win games on his own. Owen is nothing like that: he's merely a goalscorer.

However, Fergie clearly trusts him as he's desperate to praise him, to talk up his credentials, to convince us to accept him. There's no need, at least in my case: I don't think I'll ever really like Owen but I accept the fact that he's a United player now and I'm going to support him whenever he pulls on the shirt. But don't ask me to be happy about the fact that an ex-Liverpool player wears our legendary number seven shirt.

Totally respect your opinion about owen.I am just pleased that the 1st part of his hopefully long utd career has gone according to the plan. Now the Audi Cup will be the 2nd part.Lets see how that pans out for him. There are still question marks about him from our own supporters and the haters but I can just say that each goal that he scores will silence the doubters even more.

In light of the reference to little Mikey Owen, surely the title of this article could have been shortened to "Fergie Desparate". Would have saved you typing all of those extra words.

As it was discussed in the past....there is no one in the current United squad that is a worthy heir of the number 7 shirt....it takes someone special to handle the pressure that comes with the shirt...not many people can do it....as an example kaka when he went to madrid they wanted to give him zidane's number but he didn't want that pressure, the comparisons...

so probably to save a youngster from having to handle that kind of pressure, and/or to take a bit of pressure off of valencia so we stop considering him as ronaldo's replacement and compare his end result to ronaldo.....i believe that's why he gave the shirt to owen....he could handle the pressure, and he definitely is not expected to live up to the standard of that shirt...if he did great but i'm not holding my breath..

Now that you are resigned to taking our cast offs, wonder if old Taggart fancies Voronin?
