Shame Of The Summer: Owen Gets Number Seven

Shame Of The Summer: Owen Gets Number Seven

Michael Owen has been handed the number seven shirt at Manchester United. The NUMBER SEVEN, worn by Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.

I don't really know what to add. I'm speechless. I have accepted the fact that an ex-Liverpool hero will work for our success, that I'll have to cheer him on. I was willing to accept him although I was certain he would never be my favourite.

But this is unbelievable. Some might say that we're making too much fuss over a shirt number but for us it does have a special resonance and it is simply not right that someone like Michael Owen should wear it, especially as he wasn't fit to pull it on even in his prime.

An injury-prone, soon-to-be 30 ex-Scouser to get the legendary number seven shirt. I'd have preferred giving it to Kuszczak, if I'm honest.

Imagine the pressure on the next person to have it though. If it's goes to Owen, who everbody knows is no Ronaldo replacement, it eases the expectation levels a bit. I understand the dissapointment though.

Yeah, in terms of allowing obertan, nani, valencia, ljajic, tosic, welbeck etc to develop at their own pace, without the burden of Ronaldos shirt its probably a good idea. People were already writing owen off before he got the number 7, so there is no extra pressure for him as most people already expect him to fail.

To tell u the truth I did not expect him to get that number but if fergie has decided to give him that number, then surely fergie has something in his mind which we r unaware of.

Irrelevant arguments. The number 10 shirt laid dormant for a year, same should have happened in this instance. Nobody should have worn it till a someone worthy either stepped up their game or we signed someone worthy to wear it. Extra pressure of number 7 didn't stop Ronaldo when he first got it. Number 10 is the new 7.

I just feel that fergie is trying to tell him that forget what the world thinks about u and by giving him the number 7 shirt he is trying to show him how much he values him. Also it means that he will have a bigger role than I first thought as one just cannot see a player wearing the number 7 and warming the bench for large parts of the season.

persoanlly i cant think it is anything but clever business sense. owen "7" has alot more appeal than owen "42". i have no problems with it.

Everyone seems gutted about owen and the number 7 shirt. I personally feel that owen will be a huge success at united - shrewd signing of the year? I think so, time will tell, but give the bloke a chance!

On the actual issue, its just a number, calm down! Yes its been worn by a lot of greats but the number doesnt make the player, the player makes the number. Just coz he's wearing 7 doesn't mean he has to be another United legend or that we have to start bowing down to him!

By the way, what's all this about Fergie concluding business for the summer? Does that mean it's it, or typical Sir Alex that the next one will be signed almost as soon as the newspapers print his comments? I'd still look for Ashley Young... On Owen, I AM shocked, but I agree on the pressure front. And it's not too big a deal to worry about.
