Shame Of The Summer: Owen Gets Number Seven

Michael Owen has been handed the number seven shirt at Manchester United. The NUMBER SEVEN, worn by Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.

I don't really know what to add. I'm speechless. I have accepted the fact that an ex-Liverpool hero will work for our success, that I'll have to cheer him on. I was willing to accept him although I was certain he would never be my favourite.

But this is unbelievable. Some might say that we're making too much fuss over a shirt number but for us it does have a special resonance and it is simply not right that someone like Michael Owen should wear it, especially as he wasn't fit to pull it on even in his prime.

An injury-prone, soon-to-be 30 ex-Scouser to get the legendary number seven shirt. I'd have preferred giving it to Kuszczak, if I'm honest.
