How Can You Explain That Result?

Rooney, Ronaldo and Ruud van Nistelrooy were all denied on more than one occasion by the Sunderland goalkeeper. But if the Mackems had played with that sort of passion earlier in the season, they would not be the laughing stock of the Premiership sinking with the worst record in the 14 year history.

United's run of nine successive league wins came to a grinding halt, and Sunderland were relegated. Not a good night for either side, was it?

Kevin Ball: 'I told the players beforehand to go out and apply themselves because it could be an important night in gaining some respect, not just from our fans but the country as a whole.

'But it is no good just doing it in one game. We have to do it on Monday and in all our remaining fixtures.

'We have to recognise Kelvin was outstanding but he has been fantastic since Christmas. When you remember the way the supporters turned on him, he has shown immense strength of character to come back from that.'
