OFFICIAL: Gabriel Obertan Joins United

Gabriel Obertan has become Manchester United's third summer signing today: the 20-year-old French winger has signed a four-year deal at Old Trafford. The tall, skilled youngster is primarily a winger but capable of playing up front and in the attacking midfield role as well.

'Gabriel is a player we have tracked for a few years now, but because of his educational programme our efforts to get him here have always been delayed,' Sir Alex told manutd.com.

'We are delighted to get him now as he is an exciting prospect. We like to get young players and develop them, and we will see that in Gabriel over the next two years.'

Fergie also added that Obertan won't travel with the squad to the Far East, due to an injury concern so fans will have to be patient as we won't get to see him in action before August.

The player himself is very happy to have joined the champions after an underwhelming season with Bordeaux and Lorient.

"I am very happy to join Manchester United,'

'This is a big opportunity for me to play at such a great club. I am very excited to be here and I look forward to proving what I can do.'

Welcome, Gabriel!

Won't see too much of him this season I think, next season could be his to shine...

How nice! Donkey left and now you sign the "hamster" looking boy to keep Shrek with company! Why do you guys always sign the ugliest players ?

because football is not about looks, its about what u can do with the ball.

As Toss pointed out I don't think this will be his year but that doesn't mean he won't feature.I guess he will be used as an impact player which will serve two purposes,he will get an idea of the english game + it will be easier for him to settle down in our team.
abmtd
In a way its also better because right now we have quite-a-few wingers and I really want to see Nani and Tosic being given their chances to prove their worth.

I think Nani and Valencia will take the starting spots on the wings this season
tuscan3000
I agree with Tuscan, this is a make or break season for Nani I think even though he is still young.
Paulinho
I feel bad for Nani as everyone seems to be under the impression that he is crap. He only played 550 mins in the premier league last season; and OK he wasn't always great but he got 4 assists - which is still a better return than Park, Riera or Benayoun who also had 4 assists and played well over 3 times more football than he did. If he can get a good pre-season under his belt, get a run in the first team and maintain that sort of ratio he'd be one of the most effective wingers in the league. For me, he just seems like the kind of player who only believes in himself if those around him show that they believe in him too. I could see fergie giving him the number 7 just as a psychological boost for the lad (although it could go the other way and make him crumble under the pressure of it).
tuscan3000
Thank goodness, he's finally signed! I think we can all see that Fergie is trying to build another squad. Hopefully we'll keep all these young ones for more than SIX years!

good point Tuscan. Nani even scored more goals over all just this past season then the season before.
Paulinho
Unless you score more than 10 goals and get highlighted massively on Match of the Day or on Sky Sports News you must become a useless player. Nani has the attributes to make the step up, just needs to make the right decisions in the right places on the pitch. Looks like 4-4-2 next season as well. I didn't think we would sign anyone else but we have in Obertan. Does anyone else think we'll sign more or more importantly do we need to? Lljac is still to come in Jan, certainly have a lot of talent in midfield. I really think Darren Gibson will step up as well.

I heard gibson was transfer listed? Might have just been paper talk though. With Hargreaves, Carrick, Anderson and Fletcher the only reason to buy is if Hargreaves is still not expected to be fit by around November. However, Valencia can also play in the middle as he does for Ecuador - so we might not bother bringing in another. We can also squeeze a few more games out of Giggs and Scholes when we're desperate!
tuscan3000
I dunno, nothing against Gibson's ability(I hadnt heard of him being transfer listed) but I think Fergie may want an extra player in the middle of the park because Hargreaves could very well not be the same player now.
Paulinho
I'll only be worried about Hargreaves if he doesn't make the squad by the time we play City. tucsan it was The Sun that reported that Darren Gibson was transfer listed, the same paper that said we had signed Tevez permanently last year for £30 million, so I believe its a load of old tosh.
NotoriousRedDevil
could be a bargain at 3 million
