Player Reviews 08/09: Patrice Evra

We continue our player-by-player analysis of the 2008/2009 season. It's Patrice Evra's turn: he'll be judged this time.

Patrice Evra

b>Squad number: 3

b>Position: left-back

b>Games played: 48 (3 as a substitute)

b>Goals: 0

Best game of the season:

He was magnificent at Inter's stadium but his best performance came against Chelsea at Old Trafford: nobody got past him, he bombed forward effectively and he delivered a great cross to Rooney for the second goal which all but clinched the win. The only negative was that he picked up another injury...

Worst game of the season:

He couldn't really cope with Lennon in the Carling Cup final but that was nothing compared to what he got from the diminutive winger at Old Trafford in the league game. Time and again he was caught out by Lennon's sheer pace, time and again his positioning was horrible; he was never where he should have been and he could not do anything against Lennon. Fortunately the rest of the team pulled themselves together for the second half...

Overview:

Excellent in the first half of the season but never really recaptured his form after the injury against Chelsea (though there were some great performances from him during the spring as well). Looked a bit tired physically and mentally as well as the season progressed. Wasn't as much of an attacking threat as we became used to over the previous two seasons which is only partly a tactical issue in my opinion. Still the best left-back in the world though.

Vital's Rating: 7
