Player Reviews 08/09: Gary Neville

This is the second part of our individual reviews: now we analyse United club captain Gary Neville.

Gary Neville

b>Squad number: 2

b>Position: Right-back

b>Games played: 29 (5 as a substitute)

b>Goals scored: 0

Best game:

he 3-0 win over Chelsea: he was hard, agressive, determined, efficient. A close second, funnily enough, is the league game at Stamford Bridge.

Worst game:

he 2-1 defeat at Arsenal deserves a mention but the most horrible one was the 'Macheda Match': at centre-back his lack of height was cruelly exposed by Carew; at right-back his lack of pace was brutally exploited by Ashley Young and Gabby Agbonlahor. He was fighting as if his life depended on it but he was painfully out of his depth.

Overview:

lways up for the cause, always dedicated, always determined - yet it's clear that his career is coming to an end and he's now fourth choice behind Brown, O'Shea and Rafael. Although I concede that he might still prove me wrong... after all, he has already achieved a miracle by coming back after such terrible injury problems.

Vital's rating: 5

I think last season showed what we will get from Neville from here on in: injuries, good sometimes, hardworking always performances but not what he used to be. Was pleased to see him lift the Premier League though - he's a fantastic captain if not player so much anymore. Coaching role at United next up?
