Sir Matt Would Be Proud

Sir Matt Would Be Proud

Today would be the 100th birthday of the greatest man who ever served Manchester United. And Sir Matt Busby would be prouder than anybody seeing his beloved club preparing for its second successive Champions League final.

Sir Matt's obsession with Europe was a novelty in his time when the FA was still suspicious about those trips to the continent, as evident in their behaviour before Munich. But the big man was absolutely determined to land the top prize, and his determination only hardened after February 6, 1958.

Despite all the wonderful success we've enjoyed since then, in my opinion that night, May 29, 1968 is still the greatest ever in the history of our club - not least because of what it meant to Sir Matt and to Bobby Charlton.

If he was still with us (and how I wish he was!) these days he would be immensely proud to see that United became a dominant force in European football, too. It was his dearest ambition and I very much hope that as our players step onto the pitch tomorrow, they will remember this!
