The last time Sir Alex confirmed that he wanted Carlos Tevez to stay was still in 2008. Since then, only silence - until now.
Carlos scored two crucial goals in the last three days in order to take United to the brink of our 18th league crown. After tonight's 2-1 win at Wigan Fergie told reporters he and David Gill both had had a chat with Tevez and the problem is not that they don't want him.
'He is a fantastic player.
'He knows I want him to stay. I had a chat with him today and David Gill has had meetings with him.
'I'm sorry I have to keep on going on about this, it has never changed.
'That we're not negotiating with a football club is the problem - we'll see.'
That is finally an admission of where the problems lie. It's not simply the money, it's the dodgy ownership rights which make it difficult to conclude the deal.
A representative of Kia Joorabchian confirmed Fergie's story about the meeting but categorically stated that no offer had yet been made. He also added that United had agreed to the terms of making the transfer permanent when the club had completed the loan move of the striker.
Well, we'll see. I still have my doubts about whether he's good enough in the long term but his performances in the last few weeks certainly give food for thought for everyone... and this was a crucial AND brilliant goal.
