Cascarino Questions The PFA Nominations

Tony Cascarino, pundit for the New Football Pools says the PFA awards should or could have had Villa, Fulham and Everton players in there as well.

'The PFA nominees were announced this week with some surprising names picked in my opinion. Edwin van der Sar may have broken clean-sheet records with Manchester United this season but if I was going to pick a keeper amongst the final 6 choices then it wouldn`t have been the Dutchman. Liverpool`s Jose Reina or Aston Villa`s Brad Friedel would have been ahead of him as they`ve performed far better than Van der Sar in my opinion.

It`s been a strange old season really in terms of big players not really performing as usual over the course of the campaign. There are no Chelsea players amongst the nominees and to be fair it`s hard to pick out anyone who has excelled consistently at the Bridge. Then there`s Arsenal, their usual candidates such as Emmanuel Adebayor and Cesc Fabregas have both struggled with injury. Therefore, it`s no surprise the final 6 are dominated by mainly Manchester United players.

Outside of United and Liverpool, you could say Marouane Fellaini at Everton has had a terrific debut year and really should be amongst the young player of the year nominees despite his poor disciplinary record. His team-mate Tim Cahill has done well too. Gareth Barry has had another good season for Villa. There`s also Brede Hangeland at Fulham who has been excellent and a big part of their massive turnaround this season.

The nomination of Ryan Giggs is a funny one. Ok, Ryan has done well this season but in terms of Premier League football he has only started 12 games. For me, there is only one winner and he is the only non-United player in the final six, that`s Steven Gerrard.

Stevie surely is the winner hands down. He`s scored 13 league goals and produced some incredible performances in a great season for his club. He has also led by example and for me is without a doubt the man who should win.'

I can understand why Mr.Cascarino has a problem but we have to remember that its not the whole season that we are talking about, its just the first six and only on that basis I would go for vidic. If we do achieve further success a lot will depend on the defence and vidic and rio will be crucial.Even rio could have had a look in but for his injuries.

I guess we all agree that this system is not the best and it should be changed. Its just silly to avoid the months of april and may and half of march when the pressure is seriously on and its only then that we can see the true value of a player with the big games coming up.

Exactly. Votes should be done later, but as they aren't, the winner unquestionably over that time should be Vidic. I actually like Gerrard - after Rooney, he's probably my favourite English player (probably not the best place to say that but oh well) but I can't see how he's been the best player over the season (or the shortened season we are considering).

The Times reports that Rooney is ruled out of the Everton FA Cup game with the foot injury he suffered against Porto. It did look painful, and he was uncomfortably hobbling through at one point, but he appeared to run it off, and in an interview he says it's fine. Unless it's really serious, I can't see Rooney not demanding to play. Anyone know any more?

I think these nominations hand it to Gerrard on a plate.
