Cascarino Gives United A Slim Chance To Semi's

Cascarino Gives United A Slim Chance To Semi's

Tony Cascarino, pundit for the New Football Pools says Man Utd have a chance to progress in the Champions League but only a slim one!

'Manchester United have given themselves a slim chance of going through to the Champions League semi`s after a 2-2 home draw with Porto. The problem for United is that they are not protecting their back four enough at the moment from the centre of midfield. When Sir Alex`s side are at their best they defend from the front but at the moment whether it`s Paul Scholes or Michael Carrick in the centre, teams are running through them and straight at the defence.

Cristiano Ronaldo is getting away with murder at the moment in terms of his lack of work-rate. He is losing the ball and whereas he would have chased back in previous seasons, now he is just letting them go. United are renowned for working really hard all over the park whether in possession or not but Ronaldo is not doing it at the moment.

You have to give Porto credit as they started with a really aggressive formation and went for United. I personally didn`t think Porto would be as good as they were and now United face a really tough game in order to reach the semi`s. However, United have got so many good players that can score anywhere in the world so they won`t fear the trip to Portugal.

If United can keep it tight for 70 minutes then the home side may start to get a bit negative and that`s where the Red Devils individuals could come good with a bit of magic. This tie is not over by a long-shot.'

I guess we all know it won't be easy but its surely within our reach to get through. We can't be too defensive otherwise they will attack us even more.I just hope ferdinand is fit because we really miss him.I do agree with Mr.Cascarino that our central midfield does not provide enough cover but there are two ways to counter this problem for me.We should either play a defensive game and play only one up front or we can go with an attacking formation and really have a go at them because we have seen that right from their keeper to their defenders they can make silly mistakes when put under pressure.

We can look at barca as an example. In attack flawless and thats what many of us think.,how can anyone defend against that trio but no one thinks of attacking their defence which is a weakness. Also another feature of barca is that they hardly give away the ball cheaply which utd have been guilty of doing in the past few games[yes Mr.Ronaldo I'm talking about u] and just another thing to add is that about my favourite player carrick.I really do feel this guy is suffering in terms of confidence, just to make a simple pass he ends up taking so much time,it never really happened to him before.I won't be surprised to see giggs taking his place.

Can't say that many of the reds fans I've spoken to are holding out much hope of progressing to the semi's after your result on Wednesday. It's going to be a tough one, but with the luck the reds have who'd bet against them eh? Maybe you can brin Macheda on in the last minute to score with his backside without knowing anything about it? LOL

If we keep it tight at the back, I think we can nick a goal or two. it's not over. What odds on Macheda to score again? ;)
