Alan Hansen On Man Utd v Porto

Alan Hansen On Man Utd v Porto

Alan Hansen, pundit for the New Football Pools on Manchester United v Porto.

'Manchester United take on Porto at Old Trafford and I expect an improvement from a lot of their players after recent poor performances. Despite many experts views that United will comfortably progress there are no mugs at this stage of the competition so Sir Alex`s side will have to work hard to go through.

This is the quarter-final stage of the competition so you can`t be complacent against any side, after all, Porto did top their qualifying group ahead of Arsenal so are well capable of a shock. They are also champions of Portugal for the past 3 seasons and current league leaders so shouldn`t to be underestimated.

The stats behind the game do suggest a comfortable home win with Porto having never won in England in 11 attempts with 10 of those matches resulting in defeat. Although I think we all remember the only occasion when the Portuguese club did get a positive result with a certain Jose Mourinho dancing up the Old Trafford touchline.

United will have a number of players back for this one and Porto are not the best travellers so I would expect the home side to win this one. Of course, the Portuguese side have a chance but if United can get back to anything like their best form then they should take a strong lead into the 2nd leg.'

if history is to go by then we will not make it to the semis....but i believe our team has the quality to make it threw but its gonna be tough....we have to win there....very difficult but i honestly don't know what's going on with our defence and medfield....our attackers doing a good job in my opinion as usual but scholes, carrick, o'shea, gary many many problems

As I stated in my previous post, there was no way on earth porto would sit back and soak the pressure,I already knew they had attackers who could really hurt us but what really irritated me was our midfield,it had no confidence at all,it just couldn't get the simple passes together, scholes and carrick were awful plus the formation too did not suit us.Ji Sung Park playing with rooney and ronaldo would never have worked. He just does not have the physical presence nor can he hold th ball up.

our only saving grace was rooney but now that we have given two away goals porto are surely in the drivers seat.We will have two chase them which will only expose our defence more, the only good news is that rio should be back and I just hope that we play a 4-4-2 with rooney and tevez even if berba is fit as if we play him, then we will be playing with 9 men and we surely can't afford that. Our defence will have a big say in whether we get through or kiss good bye as I can surely see us scoring one.
